Handmade Terracotta in Restoration

Our beautiful Italy is rich in ancient monuments and remarkable works made from antique terracotta, a legacy that our ancestors’ genius has gifted to us. This is no small matter, as our historical artifacts attract millions of tourists each year, eager to experience the grandeur of ancient Rome and medieval castles.

However, many of these artifacts, due to the effects of weathering, suffer gradual deterioration, making frequent restoration and renovation of damaged parts necessary.

When we talk about works from ancient Rome, terracotta bricks were almost always used as the building material (such as for the Colosseum, the Palatine Hill, Trajan's Baths, and all the aqueducts).

Restoring such structures adequately requires bricks of the same type, with the same aesthetic finish as those used back then.

But where can we find bricks like those from 2000 years ago? As we know, there are kilns that make handmade bricks, very similar to the originals.

Some of these are specialized in terracotta restoration, and they can give the handmade bricks that ideal ancient patina, perfect for restoring damaged works.
